David Norman Hammer

David Norman Hammer, 69, of Belvidere, IL passed away February 18, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. The son of Ole and Jean (Spencer) Hammer, he was born December 17, 1947 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. David served in the United States Army in Vietnam from October of 1966 to August of 1968. David married the love of his life, Cynthia Cormie on November 8, 1969 in Belvidere, IL. He was a Barber, Belvidere City Fireman, Real Estate Broker, Home Builder, Investor, and the Owner of Hammertime Sports with his son Spencer. David was a member of Vietnam Veterans Honor Society – LZ Smoke Brothers. Nicknamed "Sergeant Hotel", he loved the support and friendship with his brothers. At the age of 30 he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He was a member at Heartland Community Church. He loved guns, hot rods, Fox News, but most of all his family. David is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia; daughter, Marci (Matt) Kitchen; son, Spencer (Michelle) Hammer; grandchildren, Mattison, Maci, Marli (Kitchen), Olivia, Reese, Lillian-Rose, and Graceann (Hammer); brother, Paul (Karen) Hammer; nephew, Brad (Bobbi) Hammer; niece, Melissa Hammer; mother in law, Helen Cormie; sisters in law, Mary (Dale) Steurer, Jane Cormie, Pam (Kermit) Stralow; nieces, Cassi, Becki, Stephanie, and Tenley; nephews, Taylor, and Landon. He is preceded in death by his parents. There will be a memorial service at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Heartland Community Church in Rockford, IL. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the family or to Vietnam Veterans Honor Society – LZ Smoke. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.belviderefh.com.
